Norwegian black metal legends Emperor descended upon The Palladium in Worcester, MA, for the opening night of their rare North American tour—a long-awaited event for U.S. fans. Marking 30 years since the release of their seminal debut, In the Nightside Eclipse, the show was more than a performance—it was a celebration of black metal history.

From the moment the lights dimmed and “Into the Infinity of Thoughts” rang out, it was clear the band hadn’t lost a step. Emperor performed with the precision and ferocity that have long defined their sound, proving once again why they remain titans of the genre. Their performance was both technically masterful and emotionally charged, with Isahn, Samoth and Trym in command of their craft.

The setlist was a dream for longtime fans. Highlights from In the Nightside Eclipse dominated the night, including “The Burning Shadows of Silence,” “Towards the Pantheon,” “The Majesty of the Nightsky,” and “I Am the Black Wizards.” Every blast beat, every frostbitten riff, and every haunting melody carried the spirit of early Norwegian black metal, yet felt timeless and vital.

But this wasn’t just a nostalgia trip. Emperor’s set included tracks spanning their discography, from the aggressive “Curse You All Men!” and the majestic “Inno a Satana,” to the sweeping epics “With Strength I Burn” and “Ye Entrancemperium.” They even delivered the rarely performed “Opus a Satana,” a haunting instrumental piece that showcased their classical sensibilities.

The Palladium was packed with devotees—many who never thought they’d see Emperor live. The atmosphere was electric, reverent even, as the band closed with “The Wanderer,” leaving the stage in silence and awe.

With only a handful of North American dates scheduled, this tour is as much a pilgrimage as it is a performance. For those lucky enough to witness it, Emperor reminded us all why their name is etched in black metal legend.
