Concert Review: Bacon Brothers Show at Point of the Bluff Vineyards

The Bacon Brothers delivered an intimate and interactive concert at Point of the Bluff Vineyards in Hammondsport, NY on June 4, 2023. The audience was in for a treat as the duo, comprised of brothers Kevin and Michael Bacon, showcased their incredible talent and engaged with the fans throughout the show.

The performance kicked off with Kevin wearing finger tambourines on his hands for a few songs, adding a rhythmic element to their energetic and captivating music. They immediately set the tone with the lively and enjoyable “My Old Bronco,” during which Kevin danced and even shook his booty, creating a fun and entertaining atmosphere.

The Bacon Brothers took the opportunity to interact with the audience, sharing anecdotes and insights into their songs. Before performing the “Tom Petty T-shirt,” Kevin mentioned that it revolved around relationships and admitted his dislike for the cliché question of how he and his wife have stayed together for so long. He playfully suggested that the answers might be found within the lyrics of the song, adding an element of intrigue and humor to their performance.

The band’s genre-defying music, blending elements of bluegrass, country, and rock, along with Kevin’s Steven Page-esque vocals, sounded absolutely fantastic. It was evident that they are one of the best live bands out there, captivating the audience with their seamless harmonies and exceptional musicianship.

During the performance of “Picker,” the duo delved into a country sound reminiscent of Johnny Cash, while their rendition of a “British Invasion” had a distinct “Pretty Woman” vibe in the beginning. The versatility and range displayed by the Bacon Brothers showcased their musical prowess and ability to captivate the audience with different styles.

Throughout the show, Michael was always the more serious and reserved performer of the duo, but this only highlighted his phenomenal musicianship. He displayed his talents by effortlessly performing with an impressive number of instruments during their set. From guitar, cello to a ukulele he showed how much he has mastered the musical arts. He even played the autoharp on the enchanting “Erato,” adding a unique and mesmerizing touch to their performance.

Kevin’s witty banter between songs kept the mood lighthearted and fun, eliciting laughter from the crowd. He jokingly asked if anyone under 50 managed to sneak into the venue, poking fun at the idea of age restrictions, and proceeded to explain the lyrics of their song “Dark Chocolate Eyes” to ensure everyone could fully appreciate the meaning.
Kevin also shared stories about their songwriting process, including their attempts to have songs featured in movies. He recounted an experience during a film shoot in the desert, which was initially titled “Beneath Perfection.” He humorously mentioned that neither the movie nor their song of the same name became major hits, joking that perhaps changing the movie’s title to “Tremors” caused their song to miss the cut.

The Bacon Brothers treated the audience to a variety of songs, including the quirky and fun “36 Cents” where Kevin showcased his harmonica skills. Fans of Steven Page would particularly enjoy the witty and relatable lyrics of this track. Additionally, the band performed the infectious ” Perfect Pitch,” with all members sporting ukuleles, which further showcased their versatility and musical prowess.

One of the highlights of the evening was their performance of ” She-Zee-Zee (Easy on My Eyes).” The Bacon Brothers’ incredible harmonizing skills truly shone on this track, highlighting their vocal chemistry and the overall brilliance of their songs. The harmonies throughout the concert were consistently impressive and added a layer of depth and richness to their already captivating music.

As the concert drew to a close, Kevin introduced the band, encouraging the audience to raise their hands and join in the celebration of the music. The crowd enthusiastically responded, immersing themselves in the contagious energy and passion emanating from the stage.

Overall, the Bacon Brother’s concert was a fantastic experience, and we highly recommend seeing them live. Their music, humor, and interaction with the fans made for an unforgettable night. You can catch them when they come back to New York on June 22nd in Albany, NY, and on June 23rd when they perform in Westbury.
